Hello everyone. For some years, I've been wondering what became of Evelyn Hill, PI F/A long time domiciled in ATL. She was around for a long time (certified on the DC-3) and flew up into the 1990s. The last time I saw her, she was in CLT about to work a SJU turn and she told me she was getting "too old for this $4!#!"

She had a very unique personality and an unforgettable style.

A few years ago, a former PI F/A told me that she'd heard Evelyn was in a full time care facility near ILM with advanced alzheimers. I surely hope that's not the case.

I'd sincerely appreciate any updates anyone might have about Evelyn. I'd also delight in any stories or remembrances folks had of her. She was a one of a kind.

I am trying to find anyone that worked for Piedmont Fabricators which was owned by Piedmont Airlines.
About all that I know is that it was a shop that did woodwork, such as cabinets for beauty salons and doctor's offices. They traveled around the US putting these in.
My husband, Bobby Gene Martin worked for them until 1981 when he transferred over to the airlines. If anyone can give me any information about that part of the company such as what all they did and any names of people that worked there, it would certainly be appreciated.
My email is cleehm16@yadtel.net.

The following great news from Bob Reed.
Piedmont’s very own flight attendant Carol Fair, will be participating in the North Carolina Azalea Festival this year. Here are the details from Bob along with our congratulations to a great lady – Carol Fair.

Carol still flies US Airways international routes today – some 40+ years flying the friendly skies of Piedmont and US Airways (but who’s counting?)!

Congratulations, Carol!

This is to let you know that our own Carol Fair will be participating in the North Carolina Azalea Festival in Wilmington, NC this year. The festival will be held April 1 - 5. Carol has been invited to participate as a result of her induction into the North Carolina Transportation Hall of Fame this past October. She will be among other celebrities in the three-hour parade that winds through downtown Wilmington Saturday morning. As you know, for many years, Piedmont was either a sponsor or a strong supporter of the Azalea Festival. Congratulations to Carol who continues to carry forth the memory and spirit of Piedmont Airlines.

A friend sent me this alleged quote from one of our ex PI pilots. I don't know where it originally appeared and I cannot vouch for its authenticity, but I thought all PI might like to read it!

If I'm not mistaken the Boeing 777, 767, 757 have fly by wire components as well, but not to the extent of the Airbus.

I think you will find very interesting... U.S. made vs European made...

An opinion about the A320 from one unidentified pilot!

I didn't know Sully the A320 pilot who landed in the Hudson River . I've seen him in the crew room and around the system but never met him. He was former PSA and I was former Piedmont and we never had the occasion to fly together.

The dumb press just won't leave this alone. Most airliner ditchings aren't very successful since they take place on the open ocean with wind, rough seas, swells and rescue boats are hours or days away. This one happened in fresh smooth water, landing with the current and the rescue boats were there picking people up while they were still climbing out of the airplane. It also happened on a cold winter day when all the pleasure boats were parked. Had this happened in July it would be pretty hard not to whack a couple of little boats. Sully did a nice job but so would 95% of the other pilots in the industry. You would have done a nice job.

Don't be surprised if the Airbus fly by wire computers didn't put a perfectly good airplane in the water. In a older generation airplane like the 727 or 737 300/400 the throttles are hooked to the fuel controllers on the engine by a steel throttle cable just like a TBM or a Comanche. On the Airbus nothing in the cockpit is real. Everything is electronic. The throttles, rudder and brake pedals and the side stick are hooked to rheostats who talk to a computer who talks to a electric hydraulic servo valve which in turn hopefully moves something.

In a older generation airplane when you hit birds the engines keep screaming or they blow up but they don't both roll back to idle simultaneously like happened to Flt. 1549. All it would take is for bird guts to plug a pressure sensor or knock the pitot probe off or plug it and the computers would roll the engines back to idle thinking they were over boosting because the computers were getting bad data. The Airbus is a real pile of crap! I don't like riding on them. Google Airbus A320 Crash at the Paris Airshow in 1998. Watch the video of an airbus A320 crash into a forest because the computers wouldn't allow a power increase following a low pass. The computers wouldn't allow a power increase because they determined that the airspeed was too low for the increase requested so the computers didn't give them any. Pushing the throttles forward in a Airbus does nothing more than request a power increase from the computer. If the computer doesn't like all the airplane and engine parameters you don't get a power increase. Airbus blamed the dead crew since they couldn't defend themselves. A Boeing would still be flying.

Dear Piedmont folks,
I recently received the following email from our buddy Tommy Durrer – a long time friend and Piedmont employee – 30 years working the CHO station.
Tommy, and his wife, Marian, obviously have some very difficult days ahead and needs the prayers of everyone.
Below is his address, drop him a note - please - and let him know he is in our thoughts.
Here is Tommy’s email:
On September 8, 2008, I was diagnosed with Terminal Pancreatic Cancer which has already spread to the liver. In addition I have been battling Prostrate Cancer since 2002. The only alternative treatment was a form of chemo, which I have elected not to take, as it would not stop the disease, only perhaps slow it down. Therefore I chose quality over quantity. I am being treated with narcotic's to control the pain, and hospice is assisting with this treatment.

My wife will keep you informed as we continue on this journey.

Sincerely,

I know this may be a BIT of a stretch to post here... but since Piedmont was born in Winston-Salem... I thought some folks might find this interesting.

Old Salem Curator’s Research Leads to Historic Marker

Winston-Salem, N.C. – It’s a little-known fact today that in 1919, the first commercial airport in North Carolina was established on 35 acres of land off Kernersville Road, around present-day Maynard Drive and Corbin Street. Maynard Field, as it was called, was named after Belvin W. Maynard, an ordained minister and World War I test pilot.

Maynard Field, which closed in the mid 1930’s, has a special meaning to Jennifer Bean Bower, the Associate Curator of Photographic Archives and Visual Resources at Old Salem Museums & Gardens. Bower’s grandmother grew up on a farm that partially bordered the airfield and used to walk across the airfield on her way to school. Bower’s grandparents later built a house near the end of the runway.

Bower, who has researched the site for ten years, said that Maynard Field had intersecting runways, which allowed fliers to take off and land from any direction. Fifteen-feet-wide letters that spelled out “Maynard Field,” were erected for aerial navigation, as well as directional markers that were placed at each end of the runways, she said.

“The airfield was really advanced for its day,” Bower said. “I was concerned that there was no sign of its ever being in the area. I wanted to get a historic marker put up so that the community would be aware of another aspect of their city’s history.”

Bower appealed to Forsyth County’s Historic Resources Commission and the City of Winston-Salem, which have since approved placing a historic marker at the site. A public dedication will take place there at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18.

LeAnn Pegram, a historic resource officer for the Forsyth County Historic Resources Commission, said, “Recognizing the airfield is an event of tremendous importance to the local community, and a pretty significant aviation event for North Carolina.”

As a preface to the dedication, Bower will present a free lecture, titled “Maynard Field: A Beacon for Early Aviation,” at noon on Wednesday, May 14.

The lecture, at Old Salem’s Horton Museum Center Auditorium, is also part of a series observing May as “Historic Preservation Month.” Other lectures in the Wednesday series include “Reynoldstown Historic District” on May 21, and “Saving Downtown: The Pepper Building & Tax Credits” on May 28. All lectures are at noon at the Horton Museum Center Auditorium.

Greetings all!

It's been a long time coming, but the "Piedmont Pacemaker" display is finally complete and on my shelf! Took a "hobby Knife" stab wound to the leg and got a new grandchild in the process, so this build will always harbor memories, for me.

*I used household Aluminum Foil for the Natural Metal finish*

The "blurring" of the runway numbers makes a unique and intersting display method for any kit, and adds an air of "movement" to the whole thing. Below is the technique I made up to accomplish this affect:

This build has honed some techniques I've always been curious about trying, and encourages me to go after some of the kits I've put off building up to now.

Hope you all enjoy,
Take care,

Dear Friends,

As many of you may remember, in recent years, I have mentioned flight simulator by microsoft and how much fun it is. Not only to relive the memories of the past, but the fly all over the world in the aircraft you love best.

There is a Virtual Airline on the net remembering Piedmont.
However, since October and the Great day we had at TRI with the Officers from
the Piedmont Aviation Historical Society, I have created a Group page
on Yahoo for my friends to come and enjoy some conversation much the way we did
at TRI and CLT in the 1980s.
You can post stories which will only be viewed by those who join the group.
You will also be able to access some really great flightsim aircraft in Piedmont colors, even some in the USAirways paint.

You can share pictures, information and things like that.
Here are the addresses for those who want to be a part of this...

One of the things I always liked about USAir was the new paint jobs they came up with during the mergers. The different hybrid paint schemes gave us something to look forward to in CLT on any given day, to see what would pull into the gate next.
The blue and silver looked really good. I remember a three shades of red and burgandy scheme for the new 737-400s. It looked pretty good all except the tail which was gray. The new red white and blue and silver looked great! I kind of miss those. I did not really like the dark blue of USAirways that much.
The New USAirways paint job really looks good. I think it looks like an updated Piedmont Airlines, what Piedmont may have looked like in the future.

Since the last merger and the new company that we were always promised now igsists, that never came about before under previous management, there has been talk of merger with Delta in 2006 as most of you likely know.
At the time, I was in Atlanta in Dec 2006 on a trip to Ontario California ONT on Delta. It was early in the morning, and they had these signs everywhere that read, "Keep Delta My Delta".
I thought that was admirable to see employees actually able to try to do something to prevent a merger and lost of their name and they were being helped out by their company!
I kind of envyed them a bit, you can imagine why :)
I admired the management of Delta and the employee of Delta.
Of course a larger USAirways may be necessary in the future.
But I have a suggestion...
The next time USAirways merges with another airline, and are looking for a new name to reflect a new direction and image, why not name the whole new airline Piedmont?
Not a new idea, but definitely a GOOD ONE!
Think about that and if we someday see that happen, even though we may not be personally involved, we can hold our heads a little higher to know that she did live on!

Best Regards!

Last year about this time....
We were getting ready for our flights to Pasadena California for the big New Years Day parade. Eric is a saxophone player in the DB High School Band.
It was his first year and we had been planning this trip for over a year.
The first leg of the trip was 8 coach buses from Kingsport to Atlanta to the airport to catch Delta Jets.
Delta was in the midst of their Campaign called "Keep Delta My Delta".
Most of you already know, but for those who don't, that was when USAirways was in the planning stages of trying to buy Delta.
The first thing we saw at the ticket counter in Atlanta was the huge signs asking to Keep Delta the way it was.
I can relate as I can imagine most of you can to that heartfelt sentiment.
There was a time when we would have liked to have had signs that said "Keep Piedmont Our Piedmont".
But we never had the chance.
We didn't know what was going on behind our backs.
By the time we did, it was too late.
So, I supported in theory what Delta people were trying to do last year.
Our flights on Delta were great. The landing in Ontario Ca was a little bumpy due to Santa Ana winds, alot of pitch and roll, but the landing was so perfect after it settled, that I thanked the Captain and complimented him on the landing.
A year later, here we are, reading the news which now states that United has eyes for Delta.
I don't know how much of that it true and how much of it is pure media speculation...
But I would be very disappointed if Delta, after all the hype and concern over last years merger attempt, ever allowed for Delta to be anything else besides Delta.
I do not like mergers. Never have really.
If they are going to happen, I live with them, but it would be nice if we had three or four airlines or more in this country that never changed names and always remained focused on the passengers and not so much on Wallstreet and stocks.

Amen?

Thanks to all who made the DC3 visit to TRI a success!

And special thanks to Cherryl Hartman and Glen Shanks for inviting me!

I had a wonderful time. It was like old times again.
My Mom and my son Eric were there with me. Eric took some pictures.
Anyone who wants copys of those just email me.
Dad was unable to make it and Lisa had some other things to take care of
as we have been on tour with the DB Band for over six weeks.
Piedmont was almost as important to my Mom and Dad as it was to me.
They helped me get moved in and settled in CLT and on occasions
occumpanied me on some trips over the years.
Dad even vacumed out a 727-200 one time at TRI.
I hope we can get together again from time to time and talk again.
That was a really short visit. I will try to get around to the TRI
meeting once first wednesday of the month in JC when they have it
when I can.
Life is so busy these days. I wonder where the time goes.
We just have to set aside the day and make the time.
I was really supposed to be somewhere else, but
Piedmont is so important to me, I found a way to get there!

Thanks again and thanks for keeping the Piedmont Spirit alive
in 2007! It's still alive in each of us.

God Bless,
