1970 ROA Schedule Question (4 replies)

I was a kid from ROA in the 70's and part of my love of aviation came from hearing YS-11s fly over the house. I collected quite a few timetables from back then, luckily they survived the years. Something I noticed about PI's ROA schedule I have always wondered about.

There was a flight scheduled to Winston-Salem from Roanoke, daily, that departed ROA at 11:15 pm. Flight 25. That seems kind of late to fly folks from Roanoke to Winston. Flight 25 originated in LGA, I think. But, that still seems kind of late to serve Winston.

Also, there was a 7:30 am departure from Winston to Roanoke, daily, flight 2. That flight continued to DCA. That's pretty early for those days.

Was there a reason for these flights other than passenger service?

Haven't visited this site for several months, but the last time that I did, all of the Pacemakers (tail numbers and names) were listed--what happened to them?

I am the artist who draws Piedmont (and other commercial) airliners and found this information to be very helpful in making my renderings as true-to-life as possible. My work is done exclusively from my own photographs and while the tail numbers are clear in them, the Pacemaker names are not. Can anyone help me out?

Much appreciated,

Greetings all!

It's been a long time coming, but the "Piedmont Pacemaker" display is finally complete and on my shelf! Took a "hobby Knife" stab wound to the leg and got a new grandchild in the process, so this build will always harbor memories, for me.

*I used household Aluminum Foil for the Natural Metal finish*

The "blurring" of the runway numbers makes a unique and intersting display method for any kit, and adds an air of "movement" to the whole thing. Below is the technique I made up to accomplish this affect:

This build has honed some techniques I've always been curious about trying, and encourages me to go after some of the kits I've put off building up to now.

Hope you all enjoy,
Take care,

I know I have mentioned this before, but as this was my first ever flight and on Piedmont as well, any information anyone remembers about this flight would be wonderful.
I don't really expect anyone to remember, cause we all worked thousands or even more flights per year and over the course of years, the days begin to blend in like on any other job.
But, IF anyone remembers anything about this day...
Aircraft #
Flight Crew

I would be interested in knowing if you were working the flight.

Here is what I know..
It was a Boeing 727. Don't know if it was a -100 or -200.
At the time, a 727 was a 727 to me.
Later, I got well aquanted with the differences between the JT8D-9 and -15 engines
and whether they were long range or short range, seating, tail#s and names.

By the way, what ever happened to the tail# listings on this site, the pictures and all?

Thanks!

Greetings Mr. Macklin, and all...

I am Frank White, from Randleman,NC. First of all, thank YOU for making such a wonderful site available to those of us who'll ALWAYS have a soft spot for that big blue Logo!

I paint and build scale models, and am currently in the middle of a 1/144 Airfix 737-200 that I'm putting in Piedmont colors. I have several N-number/Pacemaker decal options, but the one I was going to model is N754N, but I can't locate any reference to which "Pacemaker" that was, could you possible assist me, please?

Or, if there's a list of the Pacemakers, that would be even better! Thanks in advance! Oh yeah, which area of this forum would be most appropriate to post pictures of a model?

Take care,

Transition Scheme (2 replies)

Hello,

I was curious if anyone in the know could shed some light on a color question I had about the transition bare metal schemes worn by some aircraft just prior to the merger. On the Blue scheme, was the blue paint different than the standard Piedmont blue of the final scheme from the 70s/80s? All the photos I have been able to find would seem to indicate that it was a bit darker. I found one of a 737-400 in the bare metal, but with a standard colors radome, and the two blues look different. If it was a different paint color, does anyone happen to know what shade it was? On the maroon/red version of the bare metal scheme, am I safe in assuming that the three colors used were the same three colors used in the USAir Three Shades of Rust scheme from the 80s?

Also, does anyone know if the three aircraft in the transition scheme that wore names (N406US - Thomas H. Davis Pacemaker, N608P - City of Tampa, N617P - Pride of Baltimore) had those names printed in the same font/lettering as that used on the standard paint scheme?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

1973 FH227 Paint Scheme (17 replies)

Hi everyone,
I apologize if this subject has come up before, but I need to try and find out the registration of the only (I think) FH 227 that wore the 1973 paint scheme (the "new" Piedmont colors).

To my knowledge, there was only one of the FH227's painted in this color scheme....but I don't know what the "N" number of this bird was. There is a photo of a group of PI 227's stored at ROA after being withdrawn from use on AIRLINERS.net. And right smack in the middle of the 4 aircraft is the plane I'm talking about (with Piedmont titles removed). This aircraft did operate in service as a photo of the tail was caught sticking above the 1 story terminal building at Columbus, Ohio terminal and it clearly shows the modern PI bird and the word "PIEDMONT".

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Thanks
