He was a member of Providence Baptist Church and a former member of Union Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.  He was amember of the Mackey Masonic  Lodge     #69 AF&amp;AM in Rustburg.  He was a retired pilot for PIEDMONT AIRLINES and owned and operated Keyacre Farms wher raised registered Amgus cattle  500 head at at time.<br />
<br />
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two nieces, Amanda Foster and Terri Foster.  He was predeceded in death by a brother, Anthony (Tony) Foster.<br />
<br />
 A Funeral Service will be conducted at 3p.m. Saturday April 7, 2012, at Providence Baptist Church by the Reverend's Alden Hicks, Wiley Wallace, Charles Haley and William Tomlinson with interment to follow at Union Hill Baptist Church Cementery with Masonic Rites at the grave.<br />

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Providence Church prior to the funeral service.<br />

Among the Piedmont group was Howard Cartwright, VP of Maintenance, Captain Lloyd Lyons, another pilot, a couple of maintenance inspectors and Bill Sebastian, Avionics Supervisor.<br />

Qualitron was running a little behind schedule, which meant the Piedmont team would have to spend another night in Texas. Mr. Carthwright suggested that they all go over to one of the famous steak houses in the “restored old wild west” section of Ft. Worth and have a nice Texas steak.<br />

            <title>MIRACLE Meeting (by W. E. Sebastian (Sebo) (no replies)</title>

            <description><![CDATA[ Piedmont purchased 10 new “bare bones” FH-227 turboprop aircraft from Fairchild Hiller in 1966 and entered into a good faith agreement with Fairchild to install the avionics systems, interior, and paint the aircraft in the Piedmont livery.  However, when Fairchild presented their price quote for the finished aircraft, Mr. Tom Davis, President and founder of Piedmont, realized that the quote was untenable, and decided to do the work in house. His decision required the utmost coordination between the Maintenance, Avionics, and Operations Departments.<br />
<br />
A problem was developing because the avionics work was delaying the overall completion of the aircraft modification. Part of the avionics work was to install the complete wiring harness (a 600 pound package of wiring cables, pre-wired connectors, etc.) supplied by an outside vendor. Maintenance personnel could not do it’s work because Avionics personnel were all over the aircraft laying in, routing, clamping the large harness, and wiring some remaining connectors.<br />
<br />
Early 1967, Mr. Howard Cartwright, Vice-President of Maintenance called a maintenance meeting in regard to the ongoing work to try to resolve the conflict. Back then, the Avionics Department reported to the Operations Department and not directly to the Maintenance Department. Usually, Mr. Carthwright relied on his Maintenance supervisors to work out any conflicts with the Avionics department personnel but this time he felt the need to personally address the problems.<br />
<br />
In the meeting were Mr. Carthwright, Archie Ferguson (aircraft overhaul supervisor), a couple of maintenance foreman and some avionics personnel, including Tom Roberts. Tom was one of the Avionics Techs assigned to the FH-227 project.<br />
<br />
After Tom had given his estimate on when his crew would be through their initial work so the maintenance team could resume their work, Mr. Cartwright gruffly said, “Roberts, you can do better than that - about two days better!” <br />
<br />
To which Tom replied, “Mr. Cartwright, my name may be Roberts, but my first name is Tom, not ORAL.” (Oral Roberts was a pioneer “Televangelist.” Many of his TV viewers believed his “faith healing of the sick” were MIRACLES). <br />
<br />
The meeting adjourned quickly and quietly! The work got done.<br />
<br />
Sadly, Tom Roberts passed away in 1991, at age 55 due to a brain tumor.  His quick wit and dedication were a tribute to the Company.<br />

RJ Reynolds corporate aircraft N16R was approaching the Winston Salem airport for landing. The pilot had requested permission to land at the Smith-Reynolds airport and just after receiving the approval from the tower, the words, “Mayday, Mayday” blasted from the cockpit speakers. <br />
 <br />
More about the “Mayday” transmission later, but first the reason for the RJR flight on this eventful day that provided the observation post for the following Piedmont adventure. <br />
 <br />
Reynolds had two aircraft and several pilots at the time.  All the pilots had one thing in common - they all complained about the strange irritating noise being emitted from their speakers and/or headphones anytime their aircraft was airborne in the Winston-Salem area. After several radio unit pulls and bench checking, no problems found and no answers given.  <br />
<br />
Aboard N16R that day was Captain Orrell, the co-pilot, and Bill Sebastian, a Piedmont Airlines Avionics technician (actually called the “Radio Tech” in those days). Bill believed he had solved the radio noise mystery and this test flight was originated to test his theory and later, admittedly, by the Reynolds people to shoot down (good naturedly) Bill’s “ridiculous” idea.  <br />
<br />
A couple of weeks before, Bill was working the midnight shift and was playing with the Radio Shop communications receiver, hoping to find some aircraft  “radio chatter” to listen to during his shift. Suddenly he heard this strange static noise.  After listening for a few minutes, he realized the noise was a short burst about a second or two and occurred precisely every twelve seconds.<br />
 <br />
A few days later after talking to various people Bill called the Union Cross Air Force Radar Base and found that the large powerful radar antenna mounted atop their five story tower rotated a 360 degree turn every twelve seconds. Union Cross Base (now a public park) is about 9-10 miles from the Winston-Salem airport. This powerful radar was emitting signals strong enough to affect certain nearby radio receivers in the VHF frequency Band. During the test flight, the closer the N16R flew to the radar base the louder the interference. Problem identified.  Needlessly to say, Bill had made his point. <br />
<br />
Back to the Mayday. <br />
<br />
Immediately upon hearing the distress call, Captain Orrell told the tower he was breaking off his approach and would climb to a higher altitude and circle above the airport to stay out of the way.<br />
<br />
After Orrell switched to the emergency frequency 121.5 MHz to listen to the communications between the control tower and the Mayday caller, it was obvious there was an airplane in trouble. The Mayday call was from a Piedmont Airlines Martin 404 with an engine on fire. The stricken airplane came into view with heavy smoke pouring from the left engine as the crew was setting up for for runway 33. <br />
<br />
The talk between the Piedmont Martin and the control tower ranged from “setting it down” somewhere or trying to make the runway. There was little wiggle room because setting it down would probably endanger people on the ground and the aircraft occupants. The other choice was to try to make the runway before the fire destroyed the wing. <br />
<br />
In spite of this predicament there was some “good” news. This aircraft was on an FAA check ride flight and only four people were on board. If the Martin could make the runway, the experienced flight personnel could probably evacuate the plane quickly and safely.<br />
<br />
“I will never forget the yelling in our aircraft as we watched this plane slowly edge toward the runway. We were all screaming, ‘Hurry, hurry, oh, please hurry’ as if they could hear us,” Bill related later.<br />
<br />
While all this was going on, another serious factor had developed. Soon after getting the distress call, the Winston tower had notified the airport Fire and Rescue Team of the emergency. However, just as the fire truck pulled away from the station it lost radio communications with the tower. The fire truck driver did not understand which runway to go to, nor any other information about the emergency and was driving around in circles trying to understand the “Red-Green light” signals that the tower was using to try and direct him. Red meant “NO” and Green “YES”.  Finally, as the driver pointed the fire truck toward Runway 33, they got the Green light.<br />
<br />
“Again we were yelling, this time at the fire truck,  “Three-three  -  Three-three  -  Three three” meaning, “go down runway 33” Bill later related.<br />
<br />
Finally, the old Martin touched down and came to a quick stop. It seemed like forever before the four men exited through the cabin window exit and ran from the aircraft.  Meanwhile, the fire in the left engine had increased with visible flames.  The RJR crew had the best seat in the house while they circled overhead, and expected the whole mess to become a fireball any second. <br />
<br />
But just as the occupants were exiting the Martin, the fire truck finally arrived and soon had the fire extinguished.  The Reynolds aircraft landed on the other runway and all aboard expressed their joy in seeing a miracle in action.<br />
<br />
Later investigation revealed why the fire could not be extinguished in the air as normally would be the case. It was believed that when “something let loose“ in the engine compartment, it sheared the wiring to the fire extinguisher and the crew was unable to activate the extinguisher.<br />

Dec. 19, 1928 - Dec. 10, 2011 <br />

Samuel King Carter, 82, passed away Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. Sam was born December 19, 1928 to the late Samuel K. and Clarice Bailey Carter in Reidsville, North Carolina. He graduated from Kingstree High School in 1946 and attended the Citadel for one year. He then worked at Sears &amp; Roebuck in the Greensboro, NC office where he met his sweetheart, Mary Elizabeth Shaffer. They were married in 1950.<br />
<br />
Sam served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 in the Korean War. Upon his return, he attended Duke University and graduated with honors in 1956 with a degree in accounting. After working for Arthur Anderson in New York, NY for two years, Sam returned to North Carolina and began his 31-year career with Piedmont Airlines. He retired as Assistant Vice President, Computer and Communication Services in 1989. While working for Piedmont, Sam enjoyed traveling all over the world. <br />
<br />
However, his favorite pastime was relaxing on family vacations, especially to Myrtle Beach. Sam was an amazing storyteller, and rarely met a stranger. He was also an avid golfer and passionate about animals. He was an active member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Class for over 50 years and served in several leadership roles. Sam was also Duke basketball's #1 fan. He attended almost every home game, ACC tournament, and Final Four NCAA tournament games to show his support and cheer on his alma mater. <br />
<br />
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth S. Carter of the Elms; his daughters, Marcia Turnage and husband John of Clemmons, and Beth Roberts and husband Mark of Lewisville; grandchildren: Lauren McGee of New York, NY, Blair Roberts of Charlotte, NC, and Morgan Turnage of Pasadena, CA; sister, Nan Simpson and husband Steve of Flat Rock, NC; brothers, Robert Bailey Ward and wife Gail of Kingstree, SC, and George Ward and wife Rachel of Manning, SC; two sisters-in-laws, Louise Apple and Allene Shaffer of Greensboro, NC; and many nieces and nephews. <br />
<br />
A memorial service will be held at Maple Springs United Methodist Church on Wednesday, December 14th at 2:00 p.m.. A reception will immediately follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Maple Springs United Methodist Church, 2569 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; Iron Dukes, 116 Cameron Indoor Stadium, Box 90542, Durham, NC 27708-0542; Forsyth Humane Society, 61 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC 27104; or a charity of the donors choice .             <description><![CDATA[ James R. Hanson, &quot;Jim&quot;, age 90 passed away November 7, 2011. He was born in International Falls, Minnesota, May 16, 1921 to Freeman and Clara Hanson. His family moved to Norfolk in 1937 and he graduated from Maury High School in 1939. He had a lifelong love of aviation, took his first flying lessons at 18, and earned his pilots license shortly thereafter. At the age of 19 he was hired by NASA as a model airplane builder and later worked as a draftsman at Langley.<br />
<br />
After Pearl Harbor he entered the Army Air Force Flying Cadet Program. He earned his wings and became a fighter pilot stationed in Fowlemere, England where he completed 69 fighter missions in the P-51, earning 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses and 6 Air Medals. While in England he met Phyllis Whitworth, a student at Cambridge University, and they married in 1946.  After the war he was a flight instructor and test pilot for the Air Force. He joined Piedmont Airlines in 1952 flying DC-3's until he was called up for Korea to fly reconnaissance missions in F-80's. Returning to Piedmont he continued flying until his retirement in May 1981 as a Captain on the Boeing 737, which he loved. <br />
<br />
After retirement he continued building and test flying experimental airplanes, teaching friends and family to fly, and swapping stories with his flying friends at the Hampton Roads Airport. He was an avid artist, cartoonist, and wrote and self-published his memoirs in his book, From Kid to Captain. <br />
<br />
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Phyllis Hanson. He is survived by his son Gary Hanson and his wife, Kathy, his daughter Susan and husband Ralph, granddaughters Brooke, Jill, and Emma Lampert, Ashley Taylor and Claire Hanson. My question is were any seats in the first row aft-facing with a table between the first and second row? I know some airlines were doing that back in the late 60's early 70's with their new jets.]]></description>

Capt. James R. Hamilton, Jr. flew “West” today on the Wings of Angels.<br />
<br />
He is survived by his daughter Emilie Hamilton of Huntersville, NC along with his dog, Woodrow.   He is also survived by his sister Dianne and brother Clifford of Fayetteville, GA along with his cousin Jim and Joan Ellen West of Jonesboro, GA, and nephew, Bobby and Andrea Hamilton.  He is also survived by his extended family, his father and mother-in-law , Ralph &amp; Jackie Kirby of El Paso, TX and brother and sister-in-law, Carl &amp; Sandra Harper of Spring, TX, along with many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph “Ham” and Cora Belle West Hamilton of Atlanta, GA.<br />
<br />
Jim, also known to many as “Duck” or “The Senator” lived a very colorful life.  He came from a hardworking family in Lakewood Heights in Atlanta, GA where he was born and raised.  He served in the United States Marine Corp in the Vietnam era.  Upon returning from his obligation with the Marine Corp he finished his Law Degree at the University of Georgia and went on to serve as President and CEO of First Palmetto Bank in College Park, GA  <br />
<br />
In 1969 a dream of Jim’s came true he was hired as an Airline Pilot with Piedmont Airlines.  During his tenure with Piedmont, he was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1974 and faithfully served the people of the 34th District and the State of GA until 1976.  Of the many Boards he was proud to have served on was the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA).<br />
<br />
He retired in 1994 from USAirways  and relocated to Charlotte, NC with his family, after his retirement he substitute taught, raised our children, and served as President and held multiple positions within the Piedmont Silver Eagles. He also served on the board of the North Carolina Transportation Museum Board, Director Emeritus, helping to promote the history and preserve the Spirit of Piedmont Airlines, the only home grown airline of NC as he would say.<br />
<br />
Jim was a loyal and great friend to many and we know he’s smiling down on us all.  Rest quiet tonight our friends, he’s in the Hands of Our Lord.<br />
<br />
The funeral will be held Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Unity Presbyterian Church, 8210 Unity Church Road, Denver, NC 28037-9395 (704) 483-5266. The family will receive friends in the Sanctuary from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Reverend Carol Clark will officiate the service at 3:00 p.m., including the Committal Service at the Unity Presbyterian cemetery. There will be a reception following service for friends and family.  <br />

Capt. Stephanie Boardman Hamilton also known as “Steph” flew “West” today on the Wings of Angels.<br />
<br />
She is survived by her daughter Emilie Hamilton of Huntersville, NC.  She is also survived by her mother, Jacquelyn Kirby and husband, Ralph, of El Paso, TX, her sister Sandra Harper and husband Carl, of Spring, TX and niece and nephew, Melissa Becht and Larry Clinton Harper.    She was preceded in death by her father, Lester Lawrence Boardman.  <br />
 <br />
Stephanie was born in Wichita Falls, TX.    She attended Dallas Baptist College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.  She married her husband, Jim Hamilton, in 1985.  She was a very caring and loving mother who gave everything she had to her family, friends and community at large.   <br />
She began her career as a pilot with Piedmont Airlines on May 24, 1982 and worked as a Captain Check Airman for US Airways.  When she was not working she was volunteering her time in schools,  other charitable organizations, and served as President of the Piedmont Silver Eagles.  She also had a passion for stained glass, glass slumping and blown glass. <br />
  <br />
Stephanie was a loyal and great friend to many and will be remembered for her zest for life and her willingness to always speak the truth. We know she’s smiling down on us all.  Rest quiet tonight our friends she’s in the Hands of Our Lord with her best friend and soul mate.<br />
<br />

Mr. Robert Lee Gordon Jr., loving husband, father, grandfather &amp; friend, age 70, of Pilot Mountain, died Monday, August 15, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born August 16, 1940 in Surry County to the late Robert Lee Gordon Sr. &amp; Gradie Alma Mabe Gordon. Mr. Gordon was an airline mechanic, maintenance and operation instructor and a supervisor of ground training at Piedmont Airlines &amp; US. Airways.<br />
<br />
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Pilot Mountain and had a deep love for God. He is survived by his wife, Mary Kost Gordon of the home; daughter: Andrea Gordon Kittrell; Pilot Mountain, NC; son: Robert W. Gordon; Atlanta, GA; granddaughter: Jessica C. Barker; Pilot Mountain, NC; sisters: Beverly &amp; husband Steve Gwaltney; Pilot Mountain, NC and Becky Gordon; Pilot Mountain, NC; brother: Homer &amp; wife Gaye Gordon; Pilot Mountain, NC; sisters-in-law: Hallie Gordon; Pilot Mountain, NC and Linda &amp; husband Dave Cotts; VA; and brother-in-law: Ray Vogler; Pinnacle, NC. In addition to his parents,<br />

Mr. Gordon was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Catherine Gordon; sisters, Beatrice &quot;Bea&quot; Gordon Pell &amp; Bernice Gordon Vogler and brother, Harlie Gordon. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church of Pilot Mountain, conducted by Rev. Eugene Sherrill &amp; Rev. Will Eads with interment to follow at the Pilot Mountain City Cemetery. Mr. Gordon will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.<br />
<br />
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 from 6:00P.M. - 8:00P.M. at Howell-Nelson Funeral Service of Pilot Mountain. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to National Foundation of Cancer Research, 4600 East West Hwy, Suite 525, Bethesda, MD 20814. WILMINGTON, NC - Ronald Wayne Vogler, Sr. &quot;Ronnie&quot; July 3, 1935 - July 30, 2011 Ronald Wayne Vogler, Sr. &quot;Ronnie&quot; died Saturday, July 30, 2011. He was residing at Northchase Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he was well cared for by special staff and visitors alike. He was born July 3, 1935 in Forsyth County in Winston-Salem, NC. He was employed as a Captain at Piedmont Airlines and retired when US Air merged with Piedmont at 54 years of age with 32 wonderful years of employment. He was a member of the Silver Eagles and a QB. Ronald founded the Piedmont Breakfast Club for retired Piedmont Employees in 1989. They met regularly for breakfast at the former Whitey's Restaurant on Market Street in Wilmington and the retired group still meets every month at the Cracker Barrel. He volunteered extensively at the Ogden Elementary School for many years and won the Governor's Award during that time for his dedicated work for the school. He is survived by a son, Ronald Wayne Vogler, Jr. and Wife Linda, of Rocky Point, NC and a daughter Sharon Vogler Galloway of Wilmington. He has a grandson, David Isaac Vogler of Wilmington and two step-grandchildren Joshua R. Edens of Fort Riley, Kansas and Caleb B. Edens of Wilmington. He has one brother, Robert Allen Vogler and his wife Mary Alice of Winston-Salem, NC, and two sisters, Jean Russom and husband Chuck of Clemmons, NC and Jane Morton and husband Ronnie of King, NC. He has a special Goddaughter, Victoria &quot;Tori&quot; Mavrolis of Wilmington, NC. He was well loved by many, especially for his sense of humor and his grand generosity. He will be greatly missed. The family will see friends Wednesday, August 3, 2011 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Wilmington Funeral Chapel, where funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m.. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Winston Salem. Dec. 28, 1946 ~ July 1, 2011<br />

Mr. William Edward &quot;Bill&quot; Lee, age 64 of Advance, died Friday, July 1, 2011 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was born December 28, 1946 in Kinston, NC to the late Raymond and Josephine Swindell Lee. He worked in the Airline Industry for 39 years, coached and umpired at Southwest Forsyth Little League for 22 years and was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army.<br />
<br />
He is remembered as a beloved husband, devoted father and a tremendous man. We celebrate Bill's life and the many lives he made richer through his counsel, strength, leadership, encouragement and devotion. Best friend, forthrightness, fortitude, courage and honorable are words that describe a few of Bill's attributes. Bill made it his job to be the best husband and father first. He passionately loved his family, friends, pets, coaching and umpiring baseball. His death leaves a painful void in the lives of those who loved him. He was loved and will be missed beyond measure.<br />
<br />
Surviving are his wife, Tammy Chilton Lee; five children: Matthew David Lee and wife, Krystal, Justin William Lee and Christian Edward Lee, all of Advance and SharonLynn and William David Lee of Raleigh; one sister, Jo Ann Lee Deaver of Kinston; and four loving aunts, also of Kinston.<br />
<br />
A Memorial Service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Hillsdale United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jerry Webb. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southwest Forsyth Little League, 3801 Dillon Industrial Drive, Clemmons, NC 27012 or Hillsdale United Methodist Church, 5018 US Hwy 158, Advance, NC 27006. (Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel).<br />
