The National Air & Space Museum, located near Washington Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Virginia, has a permanent memorial called the Wall of Honor built along a tree-lined walkway leading to the main entrance of the Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. The memorial contains the names of icons of flight such as the Wright brothers, Amelia Earhart, Neil Armstrong, John Glenn and Jim Lovell and is seen by thousands of visitors each year. Officially unveiled in 2003, the Wall features 64 stainless steel foils in the shape of a sleek airfoil.
The Piedmont Aviation Historical Society (PAHS) has reserved a panel on the Wall of Honor so that employee’s names and the names of deceased employees can be permanently engraved along with thousands of individual names already engraved on other memorial plaques along the Wall. We have joined other organizations, such as the F-86 Sabre Pilots Association, the Distinguished Flying Cross Society, the Tuskegee Airmen and the Retired United Pilots Association.
For a tax deductible contribution of $100, a spouse or a family member can honor the name of a deceased former Piedmont employee which will be engraved on the dedicated Piedmont Airlines panel. To be eligible, the name must be that of a Piedmont Aviation or Piedmont Airlines employee employed between July 1940 and August 1989.
Former employees should consider participating in this plan so visitors to the museum can see the beautiful plaque honoring Piedmont Airlines, Tom Davis and the employees of Piedmont Airlines. Visitors will also be able to read a brief history of “The Model of How Good an Airline Can Be.”
