I’m not sure if we have a PiedmontSki poster in the archives but we do have a lot of the advertising and promotional materials. You may remember that we had a very large stuffed PiedmontSki plus a mascot costume and smaller stuffed examples that I believe were sold in the company store. There’s no record of what happened to a lot of those materials, except what we now have in the archives. Most of the original advertising and promotional materials were produced by Liller Neil Weltin. That agency was replaced by McKinney Silver Rocket shortly
after the PiedmontSki program was developed. We do have the ad copies that were produced by that agency.
Here’s a bit of history about PiedmontSki. Early in 1979, a name-the-program contest was held and won by Denise Park, a SDF agent. The program was developed to promote the ski resort areas around the system but it soon became a mascot for the Carline Program which was initiated in September of that year. Denise welcomed the first PiedmontSki to the system that spring.
The large PiedmontSki, who’s about 4 feet tall, served faithfully and tirelessly for several years and was featured on posters and on flyers issued with the Piedmonitors. He retired before USAir would have ended his career. He’s now residing in a retirement home in Clemmons, NC. Although he’s not in the best of condition he seems to be quite comfortable. Perhaps someday,PiedmontSki may come out of retirement for a part time job in a museum.
Thanks for your inquiry.
