Flight 101 crash near New Bern in 1966

After reading about the crash of Flight 22 in Hendersonville. I was wondering if anyone has any information regarding the crash of the Martin 404 that went down Just off the 22-4 runway at New Bern in 1966. I was out there just after it went down that day and I was wondering if anyone knows what caused the crash. The angle it took in the tree line looked as if it lost power in the port engine at low altitude. This happened in the early
morning. Unfortunately All Three crew were killed.

I beleive Joe Helsabeck was the Captain on this flight but I cant remember the others, Ronnie Macklin can probably tell you what the FAA findings were on the crash investigation.

This happened before flight data recorders or cockpit voice recorders. It was a very long investigation. I have not seen the NTSB report in many years but there was no mechanical problems with the airplane. Will see if I can find a copy of the report.I was the maintenance representative.

Try www.NTSB.GOV and go to the November listings 11/20/66. A short report is posted.

There will not be an NTSB report as the NTSB was not created until Spring 1967. I believe the CAB was in charge of accident investigation then.

The flight attendant was Pam Rumble from NY. She and Judy Littrell were room mates living at Wrightsville Beach.

Joe Helsabeck was the Captain of this flight. His first cousin was Dr. Belmont Helsabeck who was one of Winston-Salem's premier opthamologists and also an FAA medical examiner. Dr. Helsabeck was my stepfather for 25 years and loved to talk about Piedmont and he looked upon many of the pilot examinees as "his pilots". In talking about the New Bern crash one day he told me that they found Joe Helsabeck's body between the lavatory and cockpit with trousers unzipped as though he was hurrying back to his seat after recognizing the emergency.

Dr. Helsabeck died in 1995 at age 88.

I had the good fortune of flying CoPilot with Joe and he was one of the best that I flew with. He thought the most of his Family and friends and I thought of him as I did C.L. Bunch for I think they came out of the same mold. Both flew B-25's during WW II and both were there and did it to the fullest. Both were laid back but at the same time that they strapped that seat belt on they became part of the fine airplane that they were flying. It was a distinct pleasure to sit and watch them do their honored thing and to learn from it. As you look back at the original pilots of Piedmont Mr Davis and Mr Saunders selected the best pilots in the US to start a new airline.

Looking at the database in at aviation-safety.net and the NTSB archive there is little info on this accident (sorry, couldn't get the urls to paste) simply "descended below obstructing terrain in dark wooded area".

There were no passengers on board, was this a ferry flight? ASN says it was a scheduled flight.

The ASN site also has another Martin 404 mishap in 1966, an aircraft written off at ROA in July following accidental gear retraction.

Re: New Bern crash
It was scheduled flt 101. The flight left ILM at 0540 enroute to New Bern. There were no psgrs booked on the flight at ILM; the first psgr booked was at EWN. The last report given by the flight was at 0606 when they gave their position as 12 miles sw of EWN and reported no problems. It crashed into a swampy area of the Croatan Nat'l Forest. Capt. Joe Helsabeck, F/O E. O. Adams, F/A Pamela Rumble. FYI I have the original newspaper clipping from the Roanoke Times (I worked in ROA at the time). If you would like a copy, e-mail me at: djconner19@bellsouth.net

Re: M404 mishap, ROA, 1966
This was a scheduled flight that taxied out and then returned to the ramp reporting hydraulic problems. Before gear pins could be installed the plane suddenly dropped flat on the ramp. There were some minor injuries to psgrs. The acft was structurally damaged beyond repair and, after all parts were removed, it wound up in a junkyard on Lynchburg Turnpike where its silhouette was visible for years.

It was, indeed, a scheduled flight (101), but there were no psgrs booked out of ILM. The flt crashed before it got to EWN, where the first psgr was booked.

This crash will always be a part of my memory. I was an serviceman and had taken a C-130 hop from Alameda Naval Air Station, CA to Cherry Point MC Air Station, Nc.

Arrived at the New Bern AP wee hours in the morning to catch the first Piedmont flight to Charlotte.

A couple of days later after my flight I read the newspaper account about this crash.

Always wondered if my flight consisted of the same crew. Do no remember much about the flight other than making several stops, Kingston and Goldsboro are two I remember.

Thanks for all postings as I was surfing about the Piedmont crash at New Bern (info about type of A/C, cause, date, etc).
