My guess would have to be USAir, because when PI started their flights to SAN, USAir had already bought them out. PI's inaugural flight to SAN was in late 1987, probably Nov. or Dec. of that year. PI only flew SAN-PHX and SAN-LAX with their own planes. Check the route maps in the Historical Archives and see the SAN network yourself.

Just joined the forum today.

Piedmont was handled at SAN by PSA, who also handled US in those days. However, US was in another terminal while Piedmont came into the gates used by PS. Also, the rotunda used by PSA was only one level; all flights were boarded with airstairs. The second level opened in the summer of 1990.

Best regards to all my friends from Piedmont!

The SAN CLT flts I remember (circa 1988), came in just as I arrived at work early in the morning around 6:00 or 6:30am thereabouts.
I remember this because it felt strange to see passengers walking thru C concourse that early in the morning before we had our first cup of coffee.
It was called a red eye flight and from the looks of the passengers, one could clearly see why.
The aircraft used on this leg of the flts was the new 737-400 we had just recently taken delivery of. The name on the aircraft was PIEDMONT!
Silver fuse w red and burgandy/maroon stripes/tape.
People who were actually there remember it best.
Timetables don't have eyes nor memories.

PSA was indeed the ground handler for PI in SAN and SEA.

A sidenote: The PI service to SAN started on 8 December, 1987. That was the day after the infamous crash of PSA 1771. The planned inaugural ceremonies were toned down and rather muted.
