Dear Piedmont Friends,

Many of you have known Melvin from Piedmont days, Melvin graciously stepped forward and recovered the seats for the Piedmonsters (flight simulator at NC Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC) at no charge to the Piedmont Silver Eagles, that’s just the kind of person he was. Many children have enjoyed and learned a lot sitting in that seat. His online guest book is below; please sign it for his family.

KNOUSE Mr. Melvin Arliss Knouse, 73, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. He had been in declining health for several months due to heart complications. He was born Jan. 16, 1935, in Winston-Salem to Emery Meredith and Indier Fulp Knouse. He grew up in Winston-Salem, attended the local schools and graduated from Gray High School class of 1954. He was a lifelong Moravian, baptized as an infant at Trinity Moravian Church, and later became a member of Bethesda Moravian Church. He was instrumental in helping organize Unity Moravian Church of Lewisville in 1980. Mr. Knouse was active in all activities of the church, and the Moravian church was a central part of his life. He retired from Piedmont Airlines with 33 years of service. He was also active in the Lewisville community and was charter president of Lewisville Jaycees. He was a strong supporter of Wake Forest basketball, a master gardener who loved to share his vegetables with friends and neighbors and a skilled upholsterer specializing in restoring antique cars at his shop. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his father and mother-in-law, Vestal and Jessie Pruitt. Surviving him are his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara Pruitt Knouse of the home; two sons, Emery Arliss (Franny) Knouse of Belmont and Gregory Pruitt Knouse of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Tucker Emery Arliss Knouse; a sister, Mrs. Jean K. (Henry) Pearce of Lewisville; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Glenda (Cleve) Hollar; two brothers-in-law, Boyd (Janet) Pruitt and Bill (Robyn) Pruitt; seven nephews, Kyle (Bobbi) Pearce, Blake (Katy) Hollar, Sherman (Patricia) Hollar, Timothy (Maria) Pruitt, Matthew (Jennifer) Pruitt, James (Katie) Pruitt and Brook (Sandy) Pruitt; and a special niece, Deejie (Scott) Culbertson, who cared for him tirelessly throughout his illness. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 27, at Unity Moravian Church, with the Rev. Stuart Zimmerman officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today, June 26, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Unity Moravian Church, 8300 Conrad Church Road, Lewisville, NC 27023. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
