James Adron "Woody" Woodruff, of Lewisville, NC passed away Sunday, March 13 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and entered his heavenly home.

He was born April 8, 1934 in Glade Valley, NC. Woody graduated from Sparta High School. Having been paraplegic since 1956, Woody overcame many obstacles to live a fully rich life. Fond memories of his wonderful life with Ruby, family gatherings, times in the mountains, and spending time with good friends were among his many treasures. In his younger years he was known as the young man to help all the neighbors prepare their fields for spring planting.

After his accident he continued to have a successful career at Piedmont Airlines and US Airways, a successful and enjoyable bowling career with the American Wheelchair Bowling Association (serving as officer for several positons), and a very independent life until the very end. Groups such as the Craft Brothers were often playing on his radio as he enjoyed Southern Gospel and Country Music. As an avid reader he was always seeking knowledge of the world around him.

In 1975 Woody was honored by the Winston Salem Mayor's Committee for the Handicapped as Handicapped Athlete of the Year. He received the Service to Mankind Award from the Stratford Sertoma Club of Winston Salem in 1979. The Stratford Sertoma Club awarded honorary membership to Woody in 1980. On June 26, l982 the American Wheelchair Bowling Association inducted him into their Hall of Fame. Until recent years Woody conducted wheelchair bowling tournaments since 1968. He has been featured in two bowling magazines and bowled in many states from California to North Carolina. Woody was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Grace Woodruff of Glade Valley, NC.

He is survived by his wife Ruby Wilson Woodruff of Bermuda Commons, Advance, NC. Also surviving is a brother Frank Woodruff of Winston Salem. Clara (Ken) Pruitt of Winston Salem, Norma (Clayton) Brooks of Clemmons, and Pauline (Bruce) Shepherd of Lewisville are the three surviving sisters. Several nieces and nephews also survive as well as several great nieces and nephews.

Please join the family for visitation Wednesday, March 16, 12:30 pm - 2:00pm at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home in Lewisville, NC. A graveside service and burial will begin at 2:30 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons, NC.

Please make donations to the American Wheelchair Bowling Association, 16006 Congo Lane, Jersey Village, Texas or Woodruff Cemetery Trust Fund, 6337 Arden Circle, Clemmons, NC 27012. Donations can also be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
