Wayne J. Henninges, age 71, of Wilmington, NC died Sunday, Nov 17, 2002 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center. He was born January 2, 1931, in Findlay, Illinois, to the late Ralph & Violet Henninges.

A quiet, dignified man, his passion in life, besides his family, was flying. After obtaining his pilot's license, he served in the Air Force, then began working as a flight instructor and private pilot before beginning his career with Piedmont Airlines in 1965. Captain Henninges flew the last Piedmont plane from Charlotte to Wilmington before the airline became USAir. He retired from USAir in 1990. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing, and was an excellent handyman.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Harper Henninges of the home; a brother, Robert Henninges and wife Pat of Carlton, TX; a sister, Doris H. Yonker of Decatur, IL; two daughters, Barbara Price and husband Pat of Raleigh, NC and Trudy H. Smith and husband Michael of Wilmington; two sons, Wayne Garner and wife Donna, and Kenneth Henninges, all of Wilmington. He also leaves behind eight beloved grandchildren: Kathy H. Wright, Frank Henninges, Chris Garner and wife Kimberly Wells Garner, Marcus Garner, Laura Garner, Sarah Smith, Michael Wayne Smith, Jacob Southern; and one great grandchild, Brenda Wright.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Ruth Henninges, and two treasured daughters, Brenda Venable and Judy H. Southern.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, November 20, 2002, in Oleander Memorial Gardens by Rev. Will Hoyle. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 pm Tuesday at Andres Mortuary Valley Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of the Hospice Care facility.
